First Timer’s Guide to Bangkok, Thailand.

What to Do:

  1. Visit the Grand Palace – The Grand Palace is a must-visit attraction in Bangkok. The palace was the home of the Kings of Siam and is a beautiful complex of buildings and gardens.

  2. Take a Tuk-Tuk Ride – A tuk-tuk is a fun and unique way to explore the city. These three-wheeled motorized vehicles can weave through traffic and take you to places that are hard to reach by car. This is definitely worth it just for the sake of being able to say you did. It’s a more expensive way of getting around than public transportation, but it’s worth it for the story.

  3. Get a Body Massage – If you're looking for the ultimate relaxation experience in Bangkok, look no further than a Thai massage (especially at Opium Spa by The Siam Hotel or SO/ SPA by SO/ Bangkok. Not only is it an incredible way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, but it's also a cultural experience that you won't want to miss. Your mind and body will thank you for it!

  4. Shop at Chatuchak Weekend Market – This market is a paradise for shoppers and a great place to find unique souvenirs. With over 8,000 stalls selling everything from clothing to antiques, you're sure to find something you love.

  5. Visit Wat Pho – This temple (see above!) is famous for its giant reclining Buddha statue, which measures 46 meters long and 15 meters high. It's a truly awe-inspiring sight to behold.

  6. Spend a morning at Pak Khlong Talat – This vibrant and colorful flower market is a feast for the senses and a true reflection of the city's culture and traditions. The market is a stunning sight with a dizzying array of fresh flowers, garlands, and floral arrangements that are both beautiful and affordable.

  7. Take a Thai cooking class – Taking a cooking class in Bangkok is a great way to learn about the local cuisine and bring some new recipes back home, especially when you learn from Blue Elephant Cooking School Bangkok.

  8. Enjoy a River Boat Tour and Visit Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen – Experience the beauty of the Chao Phraya River and see the city from a different perspective while also discovering one of the city's most important spiritual sites.

Where to Eat:

  1. Chinatown – Heading to Chinatown in Bangkok for dinner is a culinary adventure that you won't want to miss. This vibrant and bustling district is packed with restaurants and food stalls that offer some of the most delicious and authentic Chinese cuisine in Thailand. From mouth-watering dim sum and crispy roast duck to savory noodle soups and fresh mango sticky rice, Chinatown has something for every palate and budget (quite a few of my dishes were less than $1). This was easily the highlight of my foodie experiences in Bangkok.

  2. The Never Ending Summer – Introducing a stunning restaurant set in a traditional Thai house with a beautiful courtyard; The Never Ending Summer offers a unique blend of traditional and modern Thai cuisine. The menu features a range of mouth-watering dishes that are made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and are bursting with flavor and spices. Some of the must-try dishes include the crispy pork belly, green curry, and spicy papaya salad.

  3. Or Tor Kor Market – Meet the market you HAVE to visit in Bangkok; it’s just across the road from the famous Chatuchak Market and is a great place to sample a variety of Thai dishes. The food court is particularly popular, with vendors selling everything from curries to desserts. What really sets Tor Kor Market apart from other markets in Thailand is the quality of its products. It's known for its strict quality standards, and only the freshest and best products are allowed to be sold there. A visit to Tor Kor Market is an authentic and unique way to experience the flavors and culture of Thailand and is a must-visit destination for any foodie or traveler looking to immerse themselves in the local culture.

  4. Pad Thai Thip Samai – This famous restaurant serves up some of the best pad Thai in Bangkok. The dish is made with thin rice noodles, shrimp, tofu, and a sweet and tangy sauce.

  5. Jay Fai – Another iconic Bangkok eatery, Jay Fai is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike and is known for its delicious and innovative seafood and noodle dishes. The affordable food stall is run by a Michelin-starred chef nicknamed “Jay Fai” after the restaurant, who cooks everything over charcoal. You NEED to make a reservation as there are only 12 tables and reservations are filled months in advance.

  6. Supanniga Eating Room – This stylish restaurant offers traditional Thai dishes with a modern twist, with a focus on using locally-sourced ingredients and traditional cooking methods.

  7. Som Tam Nua – Known for its delicious papaya salad (an absolute Thai staple!), this casual restaurant offers a variety of classic Thai dishes at an affordable price.

  8. Gaggan – For a fine dining experience, head to Gaggan. This restaurant is famous for its inventive and delicious Indian cuisine, and has been named one of the best restaurants in Asia.

  2. Be careful with street food – Street food is a big part of the Bangkok experience, but it's important to be careful when choosing what to eat. Look for vendors with a lot of customers, and make sure the food is cooked fresh.

  3. Learn a few Thai phrases – Even a basic knowledge of Thai can go a long way in Bangkok. Learn how to say hello, thank you, and excuse me, and you'll find that locals are much more friendly and helpful.

  4. Use public transportation – Bangkok's traffic can be notoriously tough, so it's best to use public transportation whenever possible. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway systems are both convenient and affordable.

  5. Stay hydrated – Bangkok can be hot and humid, so it's important to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
